Research and Idea Generation
First of all, I made a mood board. Not really sure on what I wanted to do yet, I thought of doing a T-shirt lookbook. My mind was in one place and I still didn't know what I was after. I hadn't expressed all my ideas yet so I went with the first thing I thought of and I looked into what some other people were doing and there were few ideas. T-Shirts with awesome designs such as Geo-Fox and swirly colourful designs. I wanted to mix and integrate what I love and like to go into T-shirts.
The difference between these two images is that one is a magazine/lookbook and one is a catalogue. It tends to be the more artistic and exciting design that is usually a magzaine and the more worded and busy that is the catalogue. In this case, it is exactly that. The design advertising the red jacket is the magazine/lookbook and the one advertising the shoes is the catalogue and as you can see around it, there is a lot of writing that makes it busy and includes prices and selling factors and so, it is a catalogue.
After going out into town and looking at magazine designs and collecting lookbooks, I found a different idea. I thought of making a magazine but not just any magazine, a mock-up. So what I thought was, I could create a fake but my twist on 'Empire' magazines. What I did was I looked at a few first hand that others had and bought a few. This opened my mind to a much better and brighter idea. One which would be fun and hardly a chore.
These three magazines are the ones I collected in town and found them online to put here:
I already knew I wanted to do empire as soon as I set eyes on it. The main part of why was because I have always loved this magazine and so I really wanted to try this.
These are my spider diagrams:
I was by this point, fascinated by the idea I had. I couldn't wait to get started on it and so I made all my ideas for it go down on paper. I had so many that the page is double-sided. This was to make the best magazine I can. What I thought was to create a page on new TV shows, New Movies and an interview with an actor of which I had not thought of. I would take questions and answers from different places online to put into one interview. Obviously, I won't be able to interview any famous people but this is the closest I can get to put in my Empire mock magazine.
Fonts:
I looked at many different fonts in DaFont. I really wanted to get the Empire logo font and put that in so that it looks genuine. The best part about that was to find out how to do it and I will learn something new. There are so many other fonts, I want to use an easy read font obviously but not something that will look silly.
'Chaparral Pro' I will definitely use. It's bold structure and size allows me to easily see exactly what each letter is, making it an easy read.
The other font I want to use is 'Arial Black' because it is good for subtitles because of its size. This also allows me to outline the outside of the letters because of how big the letters are.
I looked ad 'DK Pimpernel' but it didn't work with what I want to achieve. This font is a handwritten font but it is not clear enough. The letters are too close together and too thin. I had feedback on a different project saying that it was childish as well.
'SignPainter-HouseScript' is another one I like. This is a handwritten font that is swift and not too close together like 'DK Pimpernel' is. The best thing about this is that it is clear and will stand out on the page. I won't write paragraphs with this, however, because I will use it for titles.
