Evaluation - EXPANSE

Image
In my film, I had a few bits of feedback (peer assessment review) which were mostly positive. They mentioned the sound and how it differs to one side and I explained: Peer-Assesment-Review Josh "I think this film in nice! I love the way in the teleportation scenes, the background is there and I am gone or when I arrive it does the same. The last pano out in the aerial shot was really cool and I like how the credits join with the music. The only thing I would say to improve this is would be to edit the sound so that it isn't one-sided." In review, the sound being one-sided is actually on purpose. You see, the sound is on the left at the start, so is everything in the shot. So since the visuals are coming from the left the sound does too. I also notice that the aerial shot is mentioned and that is something I prided myself on in the 'Shot List" blog and I feel as if I accomplished all I needed for this to work along with the music in sync w...

Sounds

When doing my Recce I had an advantage in the weather being sunny and calm winds. I hope that when I shoot this film the weather isn't as such and that it is actually drizzling. I hope for this because it shows how far he is away from everything and how different it is to the busy city that he is previously in. The only problem is sound, and how it will be windy which means that there will be a lot of muffling and perhaps you won't hear my actor say his lines. I will try my hardest to pick the correct time so that this is prevented.  I will use foley sound techniques for things like walking on carpets on to hardwood floor. I plan to have my main character walk into the college and beep his card onto the wall to allow him in. Except for the place he inters is actually an exit. So setting this up and timing the way he will come in will be tricky. I will do two bits of foley for this. I will record the 'beep' on the wall to exit college to put in as him entering. I wi...

Shot lists

Image
The shot types I will use in my film are: Close-ups extreme close-ups medium wide establishing aerial medium wide cutaway follow panoramic dolly zoom tilted low angle high angle These are the best shots to use in my film for the fact of it being a film about teleporting, things like aerial shots are going to be useful. I think that a tilted low angle shot is not just artistic but it can add mystery and capture the audience into the film. I think that now I have a drone, the aerial shot is a big one that might be able to edge that extra bit of emphasis on the film. It can be used in so many ways but in my case, I will use it as an establishing shot and as I say, an aerial shot. The end credits will be an aerial shot like at the end of 'Fast and Furious 7':

Mood Board

Image
This is my mood board for my up and coming film 'Expanse'. I created this mood board which shows you all the places I want to shoot at and all the thing I want to be involved in the film. For example, the phone and headphones are there because the way the main character 'Matt' does this is by plugging his headphones into his phone. By doing this he is at work at Bath College and is teleported to outside the college and then to Bath Abbey, and then to Pultney Bridge in Bath. Lastly, he is teleported to the countryside where the trick stops working and he is trapped. That is where the film ends, but the location of Bath College is key since when the headphones are unplugged, he is teleported to college hence his frustration when he is in the countryside and can't get back to college, where he probably has a lesson.

Concept Art

Image
This piece of concept art shows all the things that my film shows. The fact the headphones are magic and allow you to teleport. The fact also, that the title 'Expanse' is in their and how it has been faded. Also the dark mystery of the bottom and 'Directed by George Redstone' fills the gap. I am unsure of the actors at the moment so it might well say 'Starring' so and so. Also, this effects who is on the front cover. That was just to give you an idea of what it will look like for the writing. There is a teenager there with casual clothes which is exactly what will happen in my film. I faded the background around him to suit the mystery like the black at the bottom. I might well include the slogan 'Don't disturb the space-time continuum' in due course.

Soundscape

A1, S1: The office Matt's dad works in should be quiet for that is a place of work. A1, S2: The hallway will be noisy and busy or, depending on the time this is filmed, this will be quiet. A2, S1: The computer room should be quiet and this is a place of work. The outside will be noisy as it is the middle of a city. A2, S2: Bath Abbey will be busy and noisy with all the people walking around. A2, S3: Pultney bridge will be quiet for it is a quiet and peaceful place. A3, S1: The computer room in Bath College will be quiet again. A3, S2: The country will be quiet and not busy at all of there are any people there.

Bath College. This is where the character will be at work from the start. The room in this picture is where he gets teleported back to when the headphones are unplugged. This is the room he could be at home from. I need to have a discrete room not too branded in 'Bath College' signs. So I can consider this room an option. The part he is at home for is really in it for only about 3 seconds when he is handed his headphones. This is the hallway he is greeted at by his friends and colleagues in one of the quick cutaways. He gets teleported outside the college for the first time. Then he always goes back to college where the headphones are unplugged. Up to down of the Bath Abbey. The second location he is teleported to. This is Pultney bridge the third location he is teleported to. Except he will be on the path right by the river. This angle gives you a better perspective of his surroundings, however.  The fourth location is in...

Short film reviews and tipping points

I watched many films and some of them weren't of my appeal. Of course, they are good because the website shows you that they have won awards but for me, some of them weren't that great. The one I liked the most was Vudu. Act 1 A woman enters the room with a box and many stuffed toys. Act 2 She sits down with some children and hands them out. Tipping point There is a smaller box inside the main box that is filled with pins of whi...

Linear and Non linear

Image
Linear means chronological, so this is where a film is played out and the storyline doesn't change to go to previous time whereas Non-linear is where the storyline goes back and forth which is non-sequential because the time changes. This means that when you have a film like Pulp Fiction which changes in the time of storyline all the time this would be seen as non-linear. So when you have a film like Alladin that doesn't change in time this would be seen as chronological. The best reason for having a non-sequential film is to tell the whole story before and after the main event of the film. Or you can have a non-sequential film where the film plays back in order so, this would be where a film starts at the back and works it's way to the start of the film Momento. Another example is La La Land where the whole film was all a dream this is non-linear.

Importance of a Recce

Image
To find out more information for our new Sci-Fi film we came up with the idea of aliens in the Royal Crescent. This was mostly because of the fact there is broken land and it's in the curved shape so this is mysterious and seems alien in its self. The scenery is lovely so my team and I would love to use a drone to capture this over the top of some very high tree because otherwise, you would not be able to see the scenery because of the size of these trees. It is important to scout these locations to make your film the very best it can be. This is why we went to the crescent, to get the scenery and the broken land and to possibly make it into an alien film since the genre we were given is Sci-Fi. The first thing that comes to your mind when Sci-Fi is mentioned is aliens and the point of our film will be that the characters know that there is something alien there but the film will be built up in suspense as to what that thing is. These characters will consider the brok...

Shot types

Image
Medium Over- shoulder Close up Wide Medium, close up Establishing Extreme close up (Cutaway) Longshot 180-degree rule High angle Low angle Extreme long shot Aerial Birdseye (pano) Depth of field Dutch tilt (dolly zoom) I found all these shot types and have been inspired by them to use in future films and for a current short film that I am making (3.2). I am a big fan of the low and high angle shots because they tell a story. By this, I mean that they show how a character feels with intimidation on the low angle looking up and then the way the high angle looking down displays how the other character feels. This could be interesting because you could use a two-shot or a medium shot to show more than one person being intimidated or providing the argument. New shots to me Noddy Shot For interviews/vox pops or when you want a shot intensely on a character Weather shot A shot of the sky, or background that would be an establishing shot...

The impact sound had on the early cinema

The impact sound had on the early cinema was big because most of the films made in the 1920's were silent so to have sound was a massive new element to shape the tone of the film. This made room for music and all sorts of different sound like Foley, diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is, for example, characters voices, the sound made by objects in the story (Foley) and even music from instruments in the story space (source sound). This means that diegetic sound can either be from on or off the screen depending on where the music is being played from. Non-diegetic sound is from a narrator's commentary like in documentaries, sound effects for dramatic effect and mood music. So mood music is also background music in most scenes since it isn't the main feature but if you use it as the only piece of sound if nothing is happening within the shot then you can use it as the main sound feature but not when other characters are talking. The difference betwee...

60 Seconds

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKNi9IYfMTc In my 60 second video, I chose to go with tension as my genre. I haven't tried tension and it was something I wanted to do. I liked making this film but at the start, I was aiming for a comedy and I guess it is a bit of both.  From target 3.1 I learned new and interesting shot types such as, a low angle looking up and the high angle looking down which are great to use because they show how a character is feeling. For example, the low angle looking up can show that a character is feeling intimidated and a high angle looking down is the person providing the argument. I learned this through watching 'A few good men" in the "You can't handle the truth" scene.  In my film, I use the low angle facing up to the girl so the guy in the chair was feeling intimidated. This gives my film a twist because you don't expect the guy in the chair to be intimidated since he is giving the girl orders. I tried to crea...

Styles and Conventions of Silent Films

Image
A silent film convention, in this case, would be the soundtrack. This helps to explain the characters intentions in the film. This means that the film is a clearly a comedy for example, or even perhaps a horror - this can be determined by the type of music used. The main feature in most films is the music but because there are no lines for the characters to say and that means the soundtrack is the only thing you hear making it really important. In my film, I used a comedic style of music that is fast paced and funny within itself. This was the reason I chose it since the film I made is a comedy so it added that extra bit of emphasis to make the audience laugh. I prefer this track over something like having Charlie Chaplin's theme because that was his selection and it clearly worked for him. For me, I had to be different, I then chose to use this track and it does (in my opinion) what it is supposed to do with any silent film. The way that you could add extra comedy wo...
