The impact sound had on the early cinema

The impact sound had on the early cinema was big because most of the films made in the 1920's were silent so to have sound was a massive new element to shape the tone of the film. This made room for music and all sorts of different sound like Foley, diegetic and non-diegetic sound.

Diegetic sound is, for example, characters voices, the sound made by objects in the story (Foley) and even music from instruments in the story space (source sound). This means that diegetic sound can either be from on or off the screen depending on where the music is being played from.

Non-diegetic sound is from a narrator's commentary like in documentaries, sound effects for dramatic effect and mood music. So mood music is also background music in most scenes since it isn't the main feature but if you use it as the only piece of sound if nothing is happening within the shot then you can use it as the main sound feature but not when other characters are talking.

The difference between diegetic and non-diegetic depends on where the sound is coming from. So this means that if the sound is represented as coming from on camera which is playing right there when you film, you can say this is diegetic. If the sound is coming from off camera and was added in during editing this is non-diegetic. To help you remember this you can remember non-diegetic as commentary sound and diegetic to be actual sound.

This definitely had a huge impact on the early cinema because it was about so much more than just a characters movement like in Charlie Chaplin's films. This required a lot of skill to be able to say the words correctly in a script so this opened up more acting jobs which is how Hollywood blew up into the phenomenon it is now. More and more people went to the cinema because of this now which meant that the money would have gotten much, much bigger. The more people went the more technology got involved with better picture and sound which is still happening today.
