Primary research

I have found 3 magazines at 3 different prices to find out what the average price is:

£4.75+£3.99+£3.90=£12.64.

£12.64 divided by 3 is £4.21 so the average price for the magazines that I found was £4.21.

The reason I used this technique to determine whether it was the average was that it is the correct mathematical way to find a way of calculating an average and I thought it would be helpful to know the average since it would be primary research. The reason that this is primary research is that I went and individually picked out these magazines and did the maths myself meaning, that I alone have collected this and calculated the average which hasn't been done before. This means that since I did this myself and worked it out you could say that this is Quantitive data because of the fact I'm using numbers. But I'm using the magazines I found as well, not just numbers on their own so that I am doing collecting something myself and no off of anyone else. If I did, this would be secondary research.

To create primary research you must go and find the data yourself and not collect it from someone or something else or find something that has already been done and then to use it yourself. The problem with primary research is the fact that by doing something that has never been done you can't guarantee that it definitely has not been done by anyone before. By doing something by calculating yourself and not taking information and statistics from anyone else, you can then call it primary research.

I think that the fonts used here are interesting, imparticular, the way the 'FourFourTwo' title is behind the footballer making that person be the main subject and really pop on the cover. The same goes for 'GQ' because is also behind Prince William. The editors will have done this to highlight the point of that edition. The subject will be the person in front of all the fonts that are jumping out at you. It gives it a more 3D angle that allows the viewer to be drawn to it. For 'Empire' Daniel Radcliffe is behind the front font which tells the viewer that there is more to this magazine than just him. All the text to the sides of him is more than the other magazines which suggests you are getting a lot in this magazine that says to the viewer that they are getting their money's worth. I will probably put the main subject over the text so that it looks more professional like these magazines and so that it shows I have done my research. I like the font from "Empire' however so perhaps I could join that font and put it underneath to mix it a bit.

The text over the footballer in 'FourFourTwo' talks about the person covering the title. This means that the main subject of this magazine is important and practically just about him. The photos and text are small, this tells us that they are a small part of this edition. This would be a great way to highlight what's important and what the main part of this is, but I like the way 'Empire' put a lot of subtitles and text there to make the magazine look busy and again, make you think you are getting your money's worth with the amount of information and content. 'GQ' on the other hand, is simple but not basic because of the fonts. The classic font for the Royalty is suitable, I like the insight into that a lot it would be something I would do if I was making a cover about Royalty. The colours besides from the bright white that says; "William" is large and so, therefore, it pops but the text below it doesn't. It fades out and you can hardly see it so, maybe that's the point but the size doesn't suggest that it isn't supposed to not jump out at you. The colour scheme could be a lot better, I think instead of the brown/beige, they could have had maroon which would make it a lot sleeker. Or possibly even make the current colour brighter, that way it would brighten the whole thing on the whole.

In conclusion, however, I like the insight to the font from 'GQ' for the Royalty. It shows that they have matched and pieced the magazine together well and it looks smart. I like the way 'FourFourTwo' have put their text under the footballer. It shows the main subject of the magazine as well as making it look like he is important to this edition. 'Empire' have used some great colour schemes and fonts and I would choose their design over anything. I think what I should do is take all the best bits of these designs and put them into my own.
