Concept Art
For concept art, I wanted to go retro and bring in something that would be suitable for my film in simplicity and style. I knew that colour was the main problem since I didn't know if I could make the car pop enough. I chose orange since it is the same secondary colour as the car and I know that orange and blue work well together. The other posters correlate to an opposite colour to the car but I chose differently and kept to just the one colour scheme (orange and blue) I didn't want to overcomplicate this and choose a bad colour for it but if I had to if chose green since that is classic lotus colours. It would be more of the Goldfinger green as that stays true to the origin. I love the simplicity as said before because it is so cool and it is definitely something I'd have on my bedroom wall which is what all movie posters are supposed to do and what they are for.
There were a lot of bubbles to represent sun reflection on the original but I edited them out to keep true to the style but I did keep the colour of the title the same as the car. I want to make this the number one poster I put out, and I will have to explain to the audience by putting the other original posters next to it to show how it's similar to the others as my name plastered all over it isn't exactly the best this to show to everyone. Besides that, I love this, it fits right in with all the others as it follows the code of colours as I have used a new and different one so it looks original, the only thing that gives it away is the 'Bath College' logo as it doesn't look the same to the originals. The only other thing I'd put on there is the date it's coming out but that doesn't apply to the style.
In this next bit, I changed it up completely as I wanted a unique one but I made four of basically the same. It includes a common title and the car. Yes, the car has to be the main subject but none of them resembles a documentary. I'm not saying my orange one does but it looks a lot better and professional than any of these. The problem here is that they are poorly edited and the car sands out too much as it's a very easy code to get caught up upon and start making more and more with no standards. I think the best one out of the four is the classic lotus colours green car one with the classic logo. The reason I like this one is that like the other one, It has 2 colours and so it's similar to the fact that it stays within range. I think sticking to only a few colours can really help the centre subject pop and pop as a poster. It looks so much more professional than the others and it really stands out, as you can see. The colours are similar to keep it true to the same code and I think it works the yellow mostly stands out on the green and the background pops. The reason the background pops is because it is the colour of the bonnet of a Caterham in classic Lotus colours which so happen to be the same classic Caterham colours today that they use.
In this poster, with the white Caterham that is famous, I made it so that it has a fuzzy effect because it would have looked really photoshopped in and very obvious and poor. So I decided to filter it and make it look so much better than it did before but I still don't think the poster is that good. I used the 3D effect to experiment and elevate the fact that it is more than a car but looking back, I should have used a different font as this one looks very cheesy. Generally, all of these are very retro and not based on a modern poster (except the orange) but that is what I was going for and the only one that pulls that attempt off is the green/yellow poster. Back to the white car poster, I like the simplicity of it but it doesn't match the others. Yes its simple, but there is too much going on and the background is bland and plain not allowing the writing to pop. I wanted to use this '7' in the middle as that is my title but it is a different colour and the writing looks faded as it matches the background colour. Then, 'May 1' shouldn't really be in there as it's not accurate and I can hardly see it. The black doesn't bode well with green as it is almost invisible because obviously, it is very dark. I want to make a better version but I'll keep this and promote the orange poster instead as this was experimentation.
The natured poster is supposed to resemble Cheddar Gorge and the car going through the twisty roads. Yes, this is the wrong car and yes, it's different to everything else but I think with a better image of the car, it could be a lot better. I couldn't find a shot good enough of Cheddar Gorge so I used this and it works as a replacement but it doesn't resemble a documentary in any way, in fact, it resembles an action or adventure movie that is the complete opposite to what I'm going to make. The car is the famous R500 that beat the Veyron around the Top gear test track so I used that because it might be what people recognise but this is the back of the car, which not many people tend to remember. It looks very fake in the fact it is obviously edited in there and the car isn't actually on that road. I couldn't find the right angle for it so I just had to compromise and this was the angle that was best. It was easy to make this and honestly, I didn't spend that much time on it because I knew it didn't work as soon as I'd finished it. Being able to sit back and look at it with fresh eyes it something I'm good at and I knew it had potential but I'm not sure how much further I could have taken it to the point of overly edited. I used the same Caterham logo I made because I was quite proud of it and I thought it worked but evidently not. I can see in this photo how hardly visible it is and how it doesn't fit. The colours work with the trees and this poster doesn't look bad from a distance but once you notice the edges of the car as you get closer it, unfortunately, gets worse. I do like to experiment however and this was all leading up to the main orange poster and I thought that this was a form of research that helped a great load.
In reflection, I like what I have produced and all of this lead up to my final one, the orange poster, because it was all in the experimentation. I'm glad about what I have come up with and I think the orange pops a whole lot and allows the car to be the main subject and the writing looks very neat. As soon as I saw those posters, I wanted to try it and I am glad I did and it looks dead on what I wanted it to. I was going for a retro style since that style and genre of the poster would suit the car as it would make it appealing to the audience since as of now, it's 2018 and you don't see a lot of retro posters so this would drag the eye. The simplicity of it is the goal and the achievement is the look. It looks simple but it is powerful since it represents my documentary by what the writing says and singling out the car as the main subject. I like the way in all of my photos, I have made them unique and not just gone for the first thing I have seen, which would be the inspiration of posters that I found of retro cars. I though that if I turned it into a movie style it would help and it did but I don't think it is good enough since they are not good quality images except the main poster I have which is why it is the best.

I love these posters, they are colourful and retro, they represent the cars colours and generally, the colours work well. The only one that the background colour could be better on, would be Taxi Driver since the car blends in and is almost camouflaged by the background colour, perhaps it could be blue as it would make the car pop out. Other than that, I love the cartoon cars, they are really cool as they are easy to interpret. The classic style is very abstract and you don't see it every day as the simplicity of this is crucial as it allows you to focus on the car not the writing even though the writing looks very neat and tidy upon the page as it is very small. It doesn't express much of a point but it does in terms of it being there and that it's actually quite effective. It shows the rights and creators in my version but in these, they show who is in the film. That is the only thing that separates me, the symbol in the bottom left of ever one and the cast. All these are for movies but it's the opposite for a documentary as it is just me, I have put my name. I have not got any other options that would stay true if I put my crew that would be completely different so I won't.
In these posters, I can clearly spot them. I think they really pop so I decided to have a go but in my next result, I attempted to recreate these in the style of a documentary and of the Caterham. I'm not sure if it worked so later on, I tried a different style and this allowed me to get my final result (orange poster) which I will promote online. I think these next results do follow the style but I'm not sure of how well they do it since I wanted to keep the classic lotus colours in and create my own version but as I later learned, it is best to recreate the other work and built from there. I do like these posters a lot and they should be simple to make in Adobe Photoshop but they are of classic cars and the Caterham is not that but it is to some degree. So I have attempted a racing style that is simple but rich in colour, just like these.
I made a black version because I think with all the colours in poster nowadays, they stand out from all posters are very colourful. I wanted to try the opposite and stand out by using darker and faded colours so that it was subtle. The black background also helps the white letters stand out which means that you are more attracted to that than the car and then you get closer and the car looks unfortunately fake. I tried burning it to make it fit in but it wasn't giving me what I needed so I tried something else by trying to make it more vibrant but I don't think the red stood out as much as I wanted it to or the white either. I like the fade underneath the car as it makes the car elevated and therefore, stand out because it gives it a shadow it looks more 3D as well so not just elevating it but also popping out as well. Not just this but the fact that the car is right in your face also helps. I went for the same thing again as the classic lotus coloured one, and used the background as the bonnet of the car in front. I put the colour scheme rather than the actual bonnet on the car in front but I think that actually using the real colours of that particular car would have been a lot better since the red would have popped. I won't use this, however, because I feel that the best way to make a poster is to use bright colours and make it bright. This is the opposite of that but that is what the attempt was based around so I am pleased with it but I won't promote it as the forefront of my film.
