Women in film

A stat taken by me from ‘Women in Film 2016 thumbs down’ showed that only 27% of writers were women in 2016 and only 24% of women reviewed films. This improved form 2014 where there was only 11.2% of women were writers. This is disappointing. Personally, this stat should be higher. It’s not that men are better than say, directing. Take Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman. This film is now the highest grossing movie of all time.

Stats:

  • Only 27% of writers are women
  • 24% reviewers are women

So this means that women are:

  • 26% Are critics
  • 41% Staff writers
  • 43% Romance writers for movies
  • 27% Comedy writers
  • 22% Horror writers
  • 23% Action writers
  • 16% Sci-Fi writers
  • 23% Drama writers
  • Men outnumbered women in every job title categorised in writing.

In the top 100 grossing films of 2016 Women were:
  • Women are 4% Directors
  • 19% Producers
  • 14% Editors
  • 3% Cinematographers
  • 11% Writers

Women account for 52% of moviegoers.
